These classes also cover key areas including the adversarial process, litigation, and alternative dispute resolution (ADR). Each class discusses the type of courts that handle specific cases (family court, probate court, trial court) and the different jurisdictions courts have (trial courts, appeals courts, state versus Federal courts). A course on Sources of American Law teaches the fundamentals of the American legal environment and the role of the Constitution in creating and defining the three branches of government.
Students take classes that train them in the skills paralegals are expected to bring to the job, including discovery and evidence, legal research, and legal writing. They learn legal terminologies, research methods, and how to draft legal documents. They explore the technologies used in law offices, including applications for specific areas. Students also get access to Westlaw, a market leader in online legal research.
Core courses complement the concentration and include topics such as computer applications, psychology, and communications.
